More Covid-19 cases reported as medics struggle with admissions

The country continues to record a surge in Covid-19 positive patients and those in need of specialised care.

Yesterday, 931 patients tested positive, out of a sample size of 6,691, bringing the total accumulated cases reported to 49,721.

The cases are slightly lower than 974 recorded on Saturday, out of a sample size of 6,862.

Nairobi was leading with 333 cases followed by Mombasa with 95, Nakuru 85, Trans Nzoia 61, Kericho 60, Turkana 54, Kisumu 39 and 24 cases in Uasin Gishu.

The counties of Kakamega, Kiambu, Busia and Kitui were also among those ranked among the top 10 with the highest numbers of infections.

“There are 18 patients in the Intensive Care Unit, 49 on supplementary oxygen, while 16 are in High Dependency Unit. A total of 1,198 are admitted in various health facilities while 3,437 are on home-based isolation and care,” read a statement by Health CS Mutahi Kagwe.

Director-General of Health Patrick Amoth directed counties to revamp isolation wards.

“Counties should open up isolation centres and revamp their home-based care because 33 per cent of cases are asymptomatic and can be managed at home,” said Amoth.
