Kajiado residents have been urged to practice proper food hygiene and sanitation to prevent a cholera outbreak.
The Kajiado Public Health Office on Friday issued an alert following fears that that locals could have contracted the infectious diarrhoeal disease.
“This is to notify the general public that we have received four suspected cases of cholera patients in the Kitengela Sub-County Hospital. One patient was confirmed positive,” read the notice by a public health officer from the Kitengela health office.
The health department further advised residents to report all diarrhoeal cases to hospital for investigation and treatment.
The health officer warned locals to avoid eating foods in unsanitary premises, to boil or treat drinking water and ensure food was served hot and stored in well-covered containers.
“Ensure you wash your hands before eating any item and after visiting the toilet. Also ensure proper use and cleaning of sanitary facilities,” read the alert.
Early this year, there was a cholera outbreak reported. According to a UN Children’s Fund report published on February 4, since the onset of an outbreak in January, 572 cases have been reported in Nairobi, Narok and Kajiado.
