Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital has employed 20 ICU nurses to boost operations at the facility.
The nurses who have been placed on a renewable contract reported last week, days after National Assembly's Public Accounts Committee visited the hospital and faulted it for letting its multi-million equipment lie idle.
Yesterday, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Peter Okoth said new nurses would earn about Sh3 million monthly.
They will complement the 19 nurses who have been operating the unit. “The unit still needs at least 60 nurses to operate sufficiently and we are working towards filling the gap,” said Dr Okoth.
Jose Albana, an ICU specialist, said the unit had high quality medical equipment but lacked staff to operate them. "One patient needs around four nurses,” said Dr Albana.
