The Ministry of Health plans to scale up a family health programmes seeking to reduce birth defects associated with lack of iron and folic acid among expectant mothers.
Assistant Director of Medical Services Silas Agutu said they will also improve on immunisation of newborns to prevent malformations of the brain, skull and spine.
In Kisumu, 70 per cent of new and expectant mothers have been included in the programme.
