The Government has announced a plan to increase the number of referral hospitals and health personnel.
Medical Services Minister Anyang’ Nyong’o said the country has only five referral hospitals.
At the same time, he said the Kenya Medical Training College, which has 32 branches countrywide, would have 47 branches to train more health workers.
“The Government is committed to improving the healthcare sector for Kenyans to get the best services across health facilities,” he said.
He continued, “Kenyans have the right to access high quality medical care and this can only be realised with highly qualified manpower,” he said.
The five referral centres include, Kenya National Hospital, Mathari Mental Hospital, Mbagathi District Hospital, Nairobi Womens’ Hospital and Moi Referral and Teaching Hospital, Eldoret.
22 more facilities
“We are in the process of upgrading others. The country requires about 22 facilities to deliver quality services,” Nyong’o explained.
The minister said more facilities would assist in training more personnel. “These hospitals will also be used for research and training,” he added.
Nyong’o spoke when he received a delegation of senior Government officials from Congo Brazzaville led by Deputy President of Parliamentary Committee on Health, Pascal Leyinda and Inspector General Prof Pascal Talani who were on a fact finding mission.
