Ever wonder why the poor never get sick? The answer could be in what they drink and eat.
Take for instance black tea, commonly known as strong tea and sturungi in Kiswahili, mostly associated with the poor.
Black tea contains antioxidants, which include quercitin, a substance that combats inflammation and supports a healthy immune system.
You have a headache? The cure could just be a sip away; black tea can be used to relieve head and stomach aches, which range from indigestion to cramps. A cup of black tea, when sipped slowly, without milk or sugar, cures nausea and upset stomachs.
To reduce the swelling and itching of many insect bites, apply a cool used tea bag to the affected area for several minutes.
Black tea is not only nutritious but it is also beneficial for beauty and can be applied to the skin as a toner. It is a powerful antioxidant together with vitamins E and C, which fight the free radical that causes premature ageing. You can also splash your face with warm or cool black tea. Do not rinse. Black tea can also help with those puffy eyes or to remove the dark circles under the eyes. Refrigerate used tea bags and use as an eye compress to de-puff and rejuvenate tired eyes. The caffeine in the tea is helpful in making eyes look less swollen. It’s quick and it’s easy!
Everyone gets sweaty, smelly feet at some point in their lives. Did you know that black tea can eliminate foot odour. Soak your feet in a tub full of darkly brewed black tea for half an hour. The tannins in the tea will help control the smell of your feet and also make them feel cooler and relaxed.
