Good relationships just don’t happen. It takes two mature people who know what they want  and are willing to put in work and dedication to make it last.

A lot of effort goes into maintenance whether you just started dating or have been in a long term relationship.

There are different dynamics to relationships today. The most common ones are the ‘common’ ones where you live within close proximity and the long distance relationships.

Either way, there are certain things you can do to keep the spark alive in a relationship.

Here are some essential ways to boost your relationship this year.

Put your phone down

Was that loud enough? When spending time together, you need to put your phone away. You can only have your phone closest if you’re in a long distance relationship since that needs constant communication. We are in the age of phones and technology and we spend so much time distracted by them. Important moments will end up passing you by and your love might gradually die. Put your phones down and concentrate on one another whenever you’re together. This is a very important step in showing dedication to your partner.

Laugh together

We sometimes underestimate the power of laughter and playfulness in relationships. When things are too serious, it’s hard to communicate openly and be comfortable with one another. Learn to make jokes and not take things too seriously in the relationship. It strengthens your bond, both as partners and as friends.

This is a great way to ensure you’re growing together as a couple. The fact that you take time to explore new things and new places together really solidifies the bond between you. This is especially a great tactic to keep things alive for couples who have been together for a long time.

Appreciation for one another is one of the core elements of a good and healthy relationship. In a world where most people want to receive rather than give, it’s refreshing to be appreciated. Appreciation comes in different forms. You can verbalize how much you value your partner or even surprise them with gifts once in a while. Also, you can show your partner that you appreciate your differences by not trying to change them. This will solidify that they are loved, cared for and not being compared to anyone else.

We all want to be treated like a priority by our partners. If one of you feels like they’re being pushed to the bottom of the list every time, it could kill the spark very quickly. It’s totally understandable when you have to focus on work and other serious matters. But the key thing is to ensure that they feel valued and important to you even with all these daily commitments. Couples sometimes let themselves ‘go’ because they are no longer searching for a partner. It’s good to be yourself throughout, but sometimes not paying attention to your looks dims the spark. Show your partner that you are invested in the relationship by putting this kind of effort.

Achieve milestones together

If you have set goals as a couple, you need to be dedicated to them. If you are constantly moving in different directions after making plans, the relationship could suffer. Being dedicated to your goals as a couple and doing your part directly reflects how you feel about one another. So if you have set fitness goals or financial goals together, always follow up.
