In anticipation of businesses reopening after the lockdown, the Kenyan government has issued guidelines for business operation during Covid-19. This is in an effort to reopen the economy while at the same time minimise the spread of the virus.

Many of us have been waiting with baited breath for the chance to get our hair and nails professionally done. Whether you’re a business owner or patron of a salon, spa or barbershop, below are things you should know about the reopening.

As a customer:

Avoid crowding the salon and sit outside the premises as you await your turn. Set an appointment with your beautician so as to avoid having to wait for long periods of time. Once inside, ensure that there's enough space between you and the next client. The guideline recommends at least one workstation between clients. Wash your hands or disinfect with hand sanitizer before you get into the salon. Payments should be made through cashless transactions such as mobile money or bank transfers.

On matters hygiene, the windows should remain open at all times. Keep your mask on at all times. Your beautician should also be in a mask. Where appropriate, ensure you are provided with a clean cape when you're getting your treatment done. All equipment (tools, workstations, capes and towels) should be clean and disinfected before it is used on you. Ensure your beautician has washed their hands before they start working on you.

Contact tracing

This is particularly important in case anyone who has been in the premises falls sick. You will be required to leave you name, phone number and ID number when you visit the salon.

Look out for:

Business owners and employees are required to follow some procedures to ensure that their premises is safe for use. As a patron, keep an eye out for these, pointing out when something is amiss.

1. There should only be a few clients in the salon at any given time.

2. The premises should be cleaned and disinfected regularly.

3. Restrooms and high traffic areas such as doorknobs, handles, faucets and sinks should be cleaned and disinfected at least twice a day.

4. There should be a handwashing station in the salon so workers can wash their hands after each client.

5. A covered receptacle should also be provided for the disposal of masks and other disposable protective gear.

Owners of these grooming businesses are required by law to display social distancing and health guidelines in their premises.

Do you sleep with the door open or closed?
