The current crop of young people and the so-called upcoming professionals are a bunch of show offs. This is the reason why as soon as you have managed to squeeze some money out of nowhere and that week you can afford to buy a decent dinner; the whole world must know about it.
When your employer sends you to Mombasa for a conference, and the employer has been magnimanous enough to buy you an air ticket, you can hardly sit still and you drown the social media with your travel itinerary.
When you get to attend a high powered conference outside the country, we must know everything about your daily experiences. Gosh, some even show off borrowed stuff. If you happen to bump into some big shot at some social scene, you have to pester the big shot for a selfie just to show us that you are connected with the high and mighty. Never mind you just meet the honcho. Folks, take a chill pill.
Interesting, this madness has not spared some adults either. I, for instance, know this lawyer who will not hesitate to post receipts of his expenditures, just to make his friends on Facebook know he is doing well in life.
These people have turned their lives into a one continuous reality show. Someone should tell them that some of us travel so often, we shudder at the thought of the prolonged periods spent away from our loved ones.
In addition, if you think posing next to a plane is a mark of accomplishment, just turn back the time and remember the first time you posed next to a car back in the village since it was a rare spectacle.
This is what you are reducing yourselves to when you pose next to a plane. How many times have you seen the long distance travellers posing next to a bus? Or didn’t you know an aeroplane is just an equipment meant to get you from one point to another?
Show of exhibitionism
When you pose next to some half-cooked food simply because you believe the food is better than what your mother fed you for years, you are simply running away from your customs. Your mother knows best; always remember that.
Much as traveling is a good thing; I will respect you more if you post of places you have visited within the country.
That way, we can be certain that you are contributing to resuscitating our fledgling tourism industry. I will respect you more when you can advise your fellow Kenyans on hidden gems and getaways waiting to be discovered within the borders.
That is what patriotism is all about. This country is full of beautiful places; from Malaba to Mombasa. So if you want to show us your love of travel, then why is it that this hobby only throbs when you are abroad? But if you are in far-flung countries getting served by Thais, Philippines’ or Indonesians, that does not add a sufuria of ugali or a few ribs of goat met into our kitty.
This show of exhibitionism must simply cease. If you want to exhibit your every move only, then you might as well start when you wake up and visit the bathroom. That way the world will not miss any of your heartbeats or breathe.
