Disgusting state of student houses at end of academic year revealed

Parenting

An estate agent has lifted the lid on the disgusting state of student houses at the end of the academic year.

Empty boxes of cereal, torn newspapers mould, damp and everything including the kitchen sink is seen strewn over the floor with landlords often left having to cough up the costly cleaning bill.

In one of the properties the door has been taken off its hinges and is being used as a makeshift table as sweet wrappers and empty beer bottles decorate the rest of the room.

Another shows a hole in the wall which has been stuffed with a discarded plate of food.

Shocking pictures of the houses were revealed to the Manchester Evening News by Nigel Loughtman, MD of Tiger Property.

His company own several properties in the Fallowfield and Withington areas of the city.

Mr Loughtman said: “Some of the state’s properties have been left in is unbelievable.

We try and talk to tenants and make sure they understand about returning the property in the state they found it to get their full deposit back but it doesn’t always happen.

I’d say only one per cent of our student tenants get none of their deposit back at all and around 10 per cent get all of their deposit back.

On average we charge £70 per student to clean up the property but we have an in house maintenance team.”
