As adults, we’re all expected to think and behave in a rational manner. By the time you reach a certain age, you should already know how to understand your emotions and how they’re interpreted by others.

However, the reality is that there are still many adults who struggle with this, maybe even all of us at some point in our lives.

When you’re not emotionally self-aware, you will start seeing that you’re not really getting the outcomes you want from life even though you have a high IQ and everything else.

The good thing is that you can learn how to develop the right skills. The first step is to understand the signs of low EI so that you can start working on yourself.

Here is how:

You don’t know your weaknesses

Everyone has their own set of weaknesses. There is no one who is perfect on this earth and that means you also have a couple of weaknesses that you need to acknowledge.

People who struggle with emotional intelligence, don’t know how to be honest with themselves about their personality flaws. Everything looks like strength and that’s exactly where the problem is.

You need to constantly reflect and be real with yourself so you can improve.

You have a hard time maintaining relationships

Emotional intelligence affects our outcomes in relationships. This can be seen in romantic connections, friendships, family relationships, and basically how we relate with others.

If you’re constantly involved with drama in your circle or you can’t hold down a healthy romantic relationship, you’re the problem.

It means you don’t have those skills needed to build healthy relationships and that’s why your life revolves around heartbreaks and drama.

You don’t have empathy

Empathy is one of the main indicators of emotional intelligence. When you know how to understand others’ experiences even when they’re not your own, you’re empathetic.

But, if you can’t describe yourself as empathetic and you don’t know how to understand other people’s perspectives, it’s a sign of low emotional intelligence.

You are easily manipulated

Low EI can also make you more vulnerable to users. It’s not always easy to know when someone is truly genuine right away but even the most basic red flags won’t be so obvious to someone who isn’t emotionally intelligent.

This is so dangerous because your life can literally be destroyed right before your eyes. Your intentions might be good but there is something in your personality that attracts the wrong people into your life which you need to be aware of.

Take time to learn the basic EI skills so you won’t end up being a target.

You don’t know how to handle conflict

Conflict is a part of everyone’s lives. You will constantly have to deal with people who disagree with you and that’s perfectly fine.

However, there are people who don’t know how to handle conflicts in a mature way. Even the slightest disagreement can trigger fights and yelling matches. If this is you it shows you need to reassess your life and dive deep into containing and managing your emotions.
