In 2005, John Githongo fled Kenya to England after exposing high-level corruption in the three-year-old tenure of President Kibaki. Among those sent to find out “how much” Githongo knew was Uhuru Kenyatta. Theirs was a case of two old boys in government, one “chasing” the other for confession.
Both went to St Mary’s School Nairobi where they wore the blue uniform alongside Jimmy Kibaki, President Kibaki’s son who queued not far from his future wife, Sheryl, at parade time.
Indeed, all Kenya’s three presidents admitted their brood at ‘Saints’ as the school is known.
And that includes Gideon Moi in a string of colourful alumni who have followed the ‘Saints Spirit’ to excel in various spheres of their lives: Afro fusion artist Eric Wainaina and jazz pianist Aaron “Krucial Keys” Rimbui (and his sister Karimi Rimbui), TV hosts Jeff Koinange and Michael Oyier, radio presenter Edward Kwach, actors Waithaka Gatumia, Charles Ouda and Chao Mwatela.
While most students are “arty”, the list goes on to include rally ace Ian Duncan.
‘Saints’ early home was in Parklands where the Irish Holy Ghost Fathers founded it in 1939. The Irish love rugby. And ‘Saints’, as its rugby team is called, has excelled in the contact sport, claiming the Prescott Cup twice. In ’46 the school moved to its present 85-acre Muthangari property where the famous two towers at the quadrangle have watched over 10,000 students file by since completion in 1954-the year Ngong Racecourse opened shop.
