Never fall in love with your employer

Living

By Mboch

My boss is handsome. I remember those first few days of working. He would walk in, and I would get thoroughly confused. I could not even look at him when he was talking to me. I would start to shake and be very clumsy if I were doing some work.

I prayed for him every day because I was so grateful that he had given me a job and had allowed Junior to stay with me in the SQ.

He is also very private and quiet. He did not care how I did my work, so long as it was done. I remember Mama Boyi, my former boss; she used to make me get up at 4am and wash clothes in cold water without eating anything.

Housework

Life is better in Mr Ken’s house. I call him Mr Ken in my heart, never to his face. When I came he was not dirty but he was disorganised.

I arranged each room and made the house neat. I cook whatever I want, and leave it on a tray for him to eat. I make him his tea just the way he likes it and I know how much sugar he takes.

I love arranging his clothes and his things in his room, although I only enter after he as gone to work. I love the way his shirts smell of perfume mixed with sweat.

Some of his friends are too loud though. Not many girls; just young men who like to drink beer and play loud music. Him he just sips on Captain Morgan and Cocacola after work.

My friend’s warning

He sends me to buy him soda at Onyi’s shop, and he says it must be Light — I don’t know what that means. Last weekend they went to Naivasha for three days.

I had a chance to go tell my friend Nancy about my nice boss.

"Ai, Mr Ken this, Mr Ken that," she complained that I talk about him too much.

I told her I just respect him and what she said shocked me. Ati you are a maid, don’t start mambo ya romance.

Who? The way I hate men! They are all dogs!

"You must never fall in love with your employer because you will fall very hard. You are not his type," I felt cold in my bones when she gave me this strong warning. I keep hearing Nancy’s words in my head.
