Mystery of Princess Diana's secret second wedding dress which vanished from studio

Entertainment
It's one of the most famous wedding dresses of all time

Royal wedding dresses are always the subject of much fascination, analysis and inspiration - but some stick in our mind more than others.

Princess Diana's stunning gown has become one of the most famous wedding dresses in history, and even people born long after she walked down the aisle can recognise it.

But the designers who created the eye-catching item also created an alternative dress for her to wear - but they kept it completely secret.

They were so tight-lipped that they didn't even tell the bride or the rest of the royal family about it.

Elizabeth and David Emanuel were tasked with designing and making the ivory taffeta gown, which featured 10,000 pearls and an impressive 25-foot-long train.

The couple were aware of the fascination surrounding the dress, and went to extreme lengths to keep the design a secret, including destroying their sketches straight after they'd been shown to Diana to make sure they could never fall into the wrong hands.

But in case the worst did happen, they also made a backup dress.

It was similar to the original, with the same ivory silk taffeta. However, there was no lace.

Speaking to People magazine in 2011, Elizabeth said: "At the time we wanted to make absolutely sure that the dress was a surprise.

“We didn’t try it on Diana. We never even discussed it. “We wanted to make sure that we had something there; it was for our own peace of mind, really.”

In another interview, Elizabeth told the Daily Mail they never finished the dress, and they only completed three-quarters of it.

She said: "We simply didn’t have time to make it in its entirety, so none of the embroidery or finishing touches were done."

However, mystery surrounds the dress as it disappeared - and the designers still don't know what happened to it.

Elizabeth told the Mail: “I don’t know if we sold it or put it into storage. It was such a busy time.

“I’m sure it’ll turn up in a bag one day!”

As well as the two main dresses, the couple made a third - an exact replica of Diana's real gown to go on display at Madame Tussauds.
