Eight foods and drinks to take to help reduce bloating

Health

Usually caused by excess gas production and/or disturbances in the movement of the muscles of the digestive system, bloating can cause increased pressure and discomfort and can sometimes make the stomach look bigger hence the term food baby.

While bloating can be nothing serious other than a reaction to some foods, it might be a bigger deal than you think. It has been linked to lead to other issues such as digestive disorder, autoimmune reaction, allergies or even stomach cancer in some cases.

Luckily that is not usually the case and it is nothing to be alarmed about.

Most causes are simple, harmless and easily treatable with over-the-counter or home remedies. Very rarely, abdominal bloating is caused by something more serious leading to a rapid worsening of uncomfortable symptoms.

Accompanied by burping (belching), gas (flatulence, farting), abdominal discomfort and a feeling of fullness it can be quite an embarrassing ride.

While the greatest culprit can be blamed on intestinal gas, the foods you eat and how you eat them, there are other causes. Some of these include swallowing air through a straw or while chewing a gum, eating too fast and/or too much, eating fatty foods, lactose intolerance etc.

A healthy diet and regular exercise are the best ways to relieve and even prevent symptoms of stomach bloating and gas.

To help you sort that issue out in the comfort of your home, here are eight foods and drinks to take.

Bananas

Bananas contain potassium. While sodium causes you to retain water in your body, potassium does the exact opposite, thus helping reduce bloating. The potassium helps regulate hydration and the electrolyte levels in your body. Drinking a banana flavored drink before a meal will help.

Melons

Due to its high water content, melons keep you hydrated and help you de-bloat. This goes for all varieties of melons such as honeydew, watermelon and cantaloupe. Any time you experience bloating it is advisable that you eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Taking a cup of melon with your breakfast will do wonders for your belly.

Ginger

Fresh ginger is always a go to remedy for most belly related problems. It is effective and helps with bloating, gas, nausea and other digestive issues. Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols that cause it to be a carminative, meaning that it helps you release gas. Inducing a ½ teaspoon of freshly chopped ginger in your tea should do the trick.

Peppermint tea

Peppermint tea is effective in de-bloating as it contains an ingredient called methanol. Methanol helps ensure that things keep moving in your digestive system. Peppermint also helps you counter cravings at night which is when we are most likely to reach for chips and cookies that have high-sodium and cause bloating. One nightly cup of peppermint tea should do the trick.

Cucumber

The most effective way to get rid of salt content in our bodies is by taking more water and water-filled vegetables. Cucumbers are known to contain 96% water which make them great for de-bloating. Their water content helps with your digestion and hydrates you. Cucumbers also help get rid of the uncomfortable feeling in your belly as they are fresh and simple.

Coconut water

Just like bananas, coconut water has high levels of potassium that help regulate electrolyte levels in your body and keeps your fluids at a regular level. One cup of coconut water contains 600mg of potassium compared to a banana that has 422mg making it an even better option. Coconut water also tastes much better than plain water.

Asparagus

Asparagus contains asparagine, an amino acid that makes asparagus a natural diuretic. Diuretics basically make you pee more, an effective way to get rid of bloating. Try incorporating asparagus to your lunch and dinners for the best results.

Pineapples

Pineapples are great for de-bloating because they contain a digestive enzyme known as bromelain. This enzyme helps break down proteins in your body that would otherwise lead to stomach issues. The stem and the core of the pineapple have the highest concentration of bromelain so try juicing the core or sipping it for the best results.
