How to stay fit while on vacation

What comes to mind when you think of vacationing is a time of relaxation and lots of fun. It’s a chance for you to experience something different while you take a break from the usual daily routines.

Certainly, there are many benefits of taking regular vacations including reducing stress and an improved feeling of wellbeing. But there is something crucial that we forget while we are out having fun and that is fitness.

Usually, there is a higher risk of becoming unfit during holidays because we eat more and workout less.

To avoid health problems and unwanted weight gains during your holiday, follow these simple guidelines:

Prepare early

Many of us put exercising on hold while on vacation because it reminds us of that boring routine we have back home. It’s hard to sacrifice even a few minutes to workout which can cause us to slack a little on our fitness goals.

One way you can deal with this is by being consistent throughout the year so that by the time you’re going on vacation, you have already prepared yourself physically. When you’re back from your trip, you won’t have a hard time picking up from where you left off.

This doesn’t mean that you should feast excessively on unhealthy food but at least you will have more room to enjoy the meals you love.

Go for quick workouts

While on holiday, you might not have time to do an entire one-hour workout routine. However, you can definitely spare even 10 minutes to get something done.

There are many videos including quick five-minute routines that guide you through a short but effective session.

Those quick workouts come in handy especially when you’re on the move.

Plan engaging activities

Realistically, a vacation mainly involves relaxing, eating and sleeping. This is how many of us choose to enjoy ourselves, which is normal.

But, if you want to take your fitness to another level even while on holiday, you should plan creative ways to remain active. You can go for sightseeing hikes, do a few laps in the pool daily as you relax and combine other fun ways to squeeze in some exercise.

This is a smart way to trick your brain into enjoying a workout even though you’re still having fun.

Workout in the morning

Some people enjoy a morning session while others prefer to exercise in the afternoon or evening. There are many circumstances that shape when you get to work out so it all depends on your routine.

On vacation however, it is advisable to get it done first thing in the morning. That is because as the day goes by, it will be tougher to interrupt your fun for a tedious workout session.

Avoid over indulging the night before so you can wake up before breakfast and do a mini workout.

Nurture a disciplined mind

Being on holiday shouldn’t cause you to throw away all the discipline you have struggled to build throughout your fitness journey. A careless attitude will cause you to ignore your healthy lifestyle and go overboard with your food and drink choices.

It is fine to take a break from working out and spoil yourself with some comfort food while on vacation but discipline is what will save you from slowly becoming unhealthy.

Make small efforts

Small efforts count and, in this case, you can actually do some maintenance before you get back to your usual routine.

You can always find ways to do a mini cardio like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or even walking to your location instead of driving or taking a cab if it’s within walking distance.

Do what you can to go the extra mile to give yourself a fitness head start.
