How to protect your toes from corns

If you regularly wear closed shoes, you’re likely to have developed at least one or more corns on your toes. A corn, bunion, or callus is a thickened area of skin that usually forms on the toes. It is caused by excess pressure or friction on the feet when we wear shoes that are too tight.

Here are some tips on how to manage existing corns, and prevent new ones from forming:

1. Wear comfortable shoes

Don’t sacrifice comfort for style. Get your feet professionally measured and then take the time to find shoes that fit well. You should be able to wiggle your toes without restriction, and both the length and the width of the shoe should be comfortable. Some shops can stretch out the shoes to accommodate your feet. It’s best to shop for shoes at the end of the day when your feet are likely to be swollen. If you must wear shoes with pointed toes, give your feet a rest by alternating with comfortable shoes.

2. Use insoles or toe socks

You can buy insoles in different sizes from certain pharmacies. These may help reduce the pressure on your feet. Well-fitting toe socks also help to prevent friction and they keep your feet dry. Toe socks are available in Bata shoe shops and certain shops such as Woolworths.

3. Regular pedicures

Pamper your feet by soaking them in warm water for at least 10 minutes. Use a pumice stone to gently rub of dead skin and to soften the corns. Dry your feet well and use a moisturising cream.

4. Replace shoes regularly

We all have that favourite pair of shoes that we could wear every day. However, depending on your lifestyle, shoes break down very quickly. You may not feel any discomfort or pain, but wearing worn-out shoes can stress your feet. Shoes that are worn out will not protect you well from the impact of walking or exercising. Running or walking shoes that are worn regularly should be replaced after a year.

5. Get professional help from a podiatrist

A podiatrist can create custom insoles to suit the shape of your feet. This will ensure that your body weight is properly dispersed across your feet, and reduce the pressure on your feet.

Remember to never try to remove the corn with a sharp object. If corns become painful, or you have diabetes or circulatory problems, seek medical advice.
