How to take care of under-eye bags and wrinkles

There are many steps we can take to reduce the swelling and the appearance of fine lines (Shutterstock)

Did you know that the first body part a man notices on a woman, even before her breasts, is her eyes? Well, according to a study carried out by Murine, a company that manufactures eye drops, a sample size of 1,000 British men and women were asked about parts of the body they first notice and both groups revealed that they noticed the eyes first.

That said, the last thing you need to have around your eyes are eye bags and wrinkles. Surely, you don’t want people looking at them now do you? Although they might be more pronounced with age, they can still appear even when you’re young and vibrant.

Many times, daily habits contribute a lot to the formation of undereye bags and wrinkles. Well, there’s nothing we can do about the ageing process but, there are still many steps we can take to reduce the swelling and the appearance of fine lines.  Below are some of the small changes you can make to help you deal with them effectively.

  • Get enough sleep

Your body needs enough sleep to maintain overall health and to keep the bags and wrinkles at bay. When you don’t get the sleep you need, the blood vessels underneath your eyes get dilated and cause the formation of eye bags.

Also, not getting enough sleep could increase stress levels and, with time, you can start developing eye wrinkles prematurely. Try to go to bed early and sleep around the same time every night. This will significantly reduce under-eye swelling and wrinkling.

  • Use sunscreen

That’s right, sunscreen! We often forget to apply sunscreen when going out and, when we do, we focus on other parts of the face more. Beauty experts advise that you should wear sunscreen even around the eyes to prevent damage from harmful sun rays.

Depending on your skin’s needs and eye sensitivity, there are options of sunscreens to choose from. The sooner you start slathering it on your face you will notice a difference in less than a month of consistent application.

  • Use under-eye serums, masks and creams

Adding an under eye serum, cream and mask could really step up your skincare routine. Some of the ingredients to look out for are caffeine and collagen which act as hydrators, antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, which are what your skin needs to reduce the wrinkles and swelling. Also, they improve your under-eye elasticity which keeps you looking young and vibrant.

  • DIY remedies

Home remedies do a great job when it comes to skincare. Some of the most common things you can use are cold green tea bags and cucumbers. The best part is that they are inexpensive and effective at the same time. They are effective in reducing the swelling and the appearance of fine lines. Give them a try and you will be glad you did.

  • Be gentle with your skin

It’s also important to be careful with how you handle your skin. The skin around your eyes is light and delicate, so handling it roughly will create the appearance of wrinkles over time. Whenever you’re touching that area, always ensure that you do it delicately and with clean hands for crying out loud. There is a huge difference when you start being more conscious about that.

  • Remove makeup before going to bed

This is another simple step that could reduce inflammation and wrinkles. Makeup products usually have a lot of chemicals in them so it’s best to avoid extending your wear as you go to bed. Leaving it on throughout will cause premature ageing, swelling and dark under-eye circles. Prevent all this trouble by gently removing your make up before you sleep.
