Healthy living isn’t easy for everyone. There are constant distractions which can easily derail you taking you back to square one.

Healthy food choices in particular can be very hard to maintain. You have to trade in the fast foods for healthier alternatives.

When all is said and done though, the benefits of making good food choices are totally worth it. You get to avoid unnecessary diseases and live longer.

Here’s what you need to do in order to actively make healthier food choices throughout the year.

i. Be firm in your decision to resist

Let’s be honest, unhealthy food tempts us every day. There are fast food joints everywhere and you can get them delivered to your home or work place in a blink of an eye. To make things worse, there are so so many adverts that remind you of the ‘buy one and get one free’ offers on the regular. This can honestly make it hard to make any progress. Unhealthy foods aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. But what you can do is to actively make the decision to do better and your actions will follow. This is the main way to resist the urges.

ii. Don’t set yourself up for failure

Sticking to familiar habits also makes it hard to make a change. Making small changes could really go a long way so this is something that you’ll need to work on. For example, if you normally meet your friends in the restaurants you loved, opt for at-home visits where you can control what you eat. Besides, cooking is a great way to bond and heave fun so this is a win-win situation.

iii. Look for fun, healthier options

Healthy food choices don’t have to be boring. When someone mentions fruits and veggies all the time, it’s easy to start missing the yummy pizzas and cakes. You’d be surprised by the healthy and delicious versions of foods that are out there. The internet is a great place to learn new recipes and you’ll realize that you don’t even crave junk food as much as you used to. You’ll find things like sweet potato fries in place of regular fries or even healthier versions of pancakes if you’re not comfortable with regular pancakes. You don’t have to suffer anymore once you find the best recipes out there.

iv. Exercise more

Diets and exercise is the core of a healthy lifestyle. If you work out more, you’re more motivated to eat well especially when you see some results as you continue. The effort and struggles of doing those exercises will also remind you to reduce the unhealthy foods and opt for nutritious choices. Working out is already hard so you shouldn’t add more stress to it by not monitoring what you eat.

v. Make a meal and/or diet plan

Our bodies work better with routines and consistency. Writing down a diet plan helps you to visualize what you want and monitor your progress. You’re also able to track what you eat and avoid those sneaky calories to get to your goal. You can choose to write it down or even download an app to help you stay on course. Both work just as long as you’re able to track things.

vi. Reward yourself

Don’t forget to reward yourself for your consistency. In fact, having a cheat day where you indulge in your foods, healthy or not, is very crucial for your progress. Being too hard on yourself might actually dampen your spirit and cause you to go back to your old ways. Give yourself credit where it’s due through a reward system designed for you.

What's that thing you have been procrastinating over?
