6 natural home remedies for passing gas

Health

Passing gas can be quite embarrassing when let out and when kept in, can cause a lot of discomfort. Flatulence happens when excessive gas is collected in the digestive tracts. A common occurrence, this is no cause of concern and it does not necessarily mean there is something wrong with your digestion. Gas can collect in your stomach when gases emitted during digestion accumulate in your stomach or you swallow air while eating or drinking.

Food choices high in carbs, excessive drinking, not chewing properly, spicy food, constipation, additives and even stress can also cause gas to form in your stomach. This gas can be expelled through belching or farting. When this is not possible, one can experience gas pain.

Good news is, you don’t not have to spend a dime in the pharmacy. Here are 6 remedies you can find right at your kitchen.

Apple cider vinegar

Commonly used in indigestion treatment, the enzymes in ACV alkanizes your body and gives an almost instant relief. Safe for pregnant mothers and children as well, add two table spoons of raw apple cider vinegar to a glass of warm water and drink.

Fresh ginger

Ginger contains a natural carminative agent that relieves flatulence. It also accelerates the emptying of the gastric and digestion. To alleviate gas, grate about one tea spoon of ginger and mix with a tea spoon of lemon juice. Take this after meals. You can also make ginger tea by boiling one tea spoon of fresh ginger in one and a half cups of water. Boil and let it cool then drink.

Lime juice and baking soda

A great remedy for many ailments, mix a tablespoon of lime juice with half a tea spoon of baking soda and add to a glass of warm water. Stir and drink after meals. This mix will lead to the formation of carbon dioxide which aids in digestion.

Cinnamon

One of the best remedies for flatulence, cinnamon prevents gas formation by reducing the secretion of gastric acid and pepsin from the stomach walls. Prepare a cinnamon tea by boiling a teaspoon of ground cinnamon with a cup of water. Let it cool and drink. You can also add half a tea spoon of cinnamon powder and honey to a warm cup of milk.

Cumin

Cumin is said to contain essential oils which stimulate the salivary glands aiding in better digestion of food and preventing formation of excess gas. To two cups of water, add a table spoon of cumin seeds and boil. Strain and let it cool then drink after meals.

Fennel seeds

Many swear by fennel seeds to help get rid of excessive gas. Therefore, crush a tea spoon of fennel seeds and add to a cup or two of water. Boil, strain and let it cool before drinking. Do this twice or after a heavy spicy meal.

If symptoms persist accompanied by heartburn, weight loss, diarrhea or vomiting, this could be a more serious issue that needs to be checked by your doctor. Over the counter alternatives are also available after proper self-assessment.
