Panic as Covid-19 patient escapes from Mbagathi isolation centre

Security agents were yesterday looking for a Covid-19 patient who escaped from an isolation centre in Nairobi.

Allan Odhiambo sprinted out of the Mbagathi Infectious Disease Unit (IDU) at about 10 am after he threatened to attack security guards on duty with a metal bar.

The guards said he also told them he would infect them if they tried to hold him. This was after he allegedly broke a padlock at the entrance to his room.

Police were yesterday looking for the man who escaped towards Ngumo bus stop. He has been residing in Fedha estate, where he had been traced to after his contacts tested positive. He was positive too and had been at the facility for three days.

Police said a search in Ngumo area bore no fruit, as he had escaped. The patient comes from Kisumu and police have appealed to anyone aware of his whereabouts to report.

Nairobi police boss Philip Ndolo said the patient needed to return or be taken back to the centre to recover, as he was a danger to the society. “If you know him or if you are hosting him please make the arrangements to surrender him soonest possible for everyone's safety,” said Ndolo.

Security agencies were activated to trace him. They said they were also investigating what triggered the escape.

This came as the Covid-19 cases rose to 1,618 after another 147 out of 2,831 samples taken were confirmed positive yesterday. The disease is now in 31 counties, and a total 70,172 samples have been tested so far.

Of the new cases, 90 are in Nairobi, 41 in Mombasa, three in Kiambu, two in Nyeri and two in Uasin Gishu. Of these, 87 are men. There were 13 new recoveries, increasing the number to 421. Three more people died, raising the fatalities to 58.
