The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned against use of unapproved traditional remedies for Covid-19 even as it affirmed its commitment to support initiative on use of alternative medicine.
This is in response to news that some African countries have resorted to using traditional medicine to cure coronavirus.
Madagascar has come up with a herbal tonic which it claims cures Covid-19.
“The World Health Organisation (WHO) welcomes innovations around the world including re-purposing drugs, traditional medicines and developing new therapies in the search for potential treatments for Covid-19,” read the statement from the Regional Office for Africa.
It said the use of products to treat Covid-19, which have not been robustly investigated can put people in danger, giving a false sense of security.
The agency sought to remind African governments of their commitment through their health ministers who adopted a resolution urging member states to produce evidence on safety and efficacy of traditional medicine during the 50th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa 20 years ago.
“WHO is working with research institutions to select traditional medicine products which can be investigated for clinical efficacy and safety for Covid-19 treatment,” it said.
