Why flu could be worse for men: Scientists reveal why men suffer more than women

Health & Science

Could this explain why men find it so hard to deal with flu? And end up lolling pathetically in bed when they have to cope with a headache and a sore throat?

A new study reports that men tend to break down and feel much worse if they are suffering two or more painful conditions at the same time.

On the other hand, they tend to 'tough it out' more than women when they have just one thing to deal with.

"Women are more impacted by illness than men, unless more than one symptom is present," says researcher Robert Rosenman of Washington State University. "Then men are more impacted than women."

Why do men suffer more from multiple conditions?

Is this because men can't multitask suffering more than one type of pain?

Well it could be down to cultural norms say the study's co-authors Dusanee Kesavayuth and Vasileios Zikos. Men might be bottling it up more.

"From a social science perspective, it could be that due to cultural norms, men are expected to endure a single physical illness without showing their feelings.

"But when men are faced with multiple physical illnesses meaning that they may be severely ill, the negative effect on their health satisfaction manifests itself."

And it could change how your doctor treats you

The long-term 'Personality and Health Satisfaction' project looked at how 2895 British adults rated their health satisfaction over the course of 20 years and then matched that up with different health conditions that the people had.

The researchers say that their findings do have implications about which patients need the most medical support.

In the meantime - go easy on him, he may ACTUALLY be feeling worse than you think.
