Covid-19: Kenya records 24 deaths, 591 cases in last 24 hours

Kenya’s Covid-19 deaths rose to 3,970 on Monday after 24 more patients succumbed to the virus.

The Ministry of Health also recorded 591 new infections in the past 24 hours, from a sample of 4,737 raising the country's caseload to 204,271.

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new infections take the country’s positivity rate to 12.5 per cent and cumulated tests conducted so far to 2,142,309.

Out of the new patients, 316 are male, whereas 275 are female, with the youngest carrier being a 10-month-old baby, and the oldest aged 87.

Of the new cases, 16 are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans.

Distribution

In terms of counties' distribution, Nairobi leads with 422, Mombasa 34, Kiambu 19, Uasin Gishu 17, Garissa 14, Murang’a 10, Kirinyaga 9, Nyeri 9, Busia 7, Narok 6, Kajiado 4, Laikipia 4, Machakos 4, Kakamega 4, Baringo 3, Mandera 3, Embu 3, Nakuru 3, Nyandarua 3, Siaya 2, Kisii 2.

Homa Bay 1, Kericho 1, Kilifi 1, Kitui 1, Meru 1, Nandi 1, Elgeyo Marakwet 1, Trans Nzoia 1 and West Pokot 1.

The total recoveries so far stand at 189,692 after 561 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours with 469 from the Home-Based and Isolation care programme while 92 are from various health facilities in the country.

Of the total recoveries, 151,146 are from the Home Based Isolation Care programme while 38,546 are from various hospitals countrywide.

A total of 1,483 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 4,021 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

One hundred and eighty-nine (189) patients are in the ICU, 45 of whom are on ventilatory support and 93 on supplemental oxygen. Fifty-one (51) patients are on observation.

Another 461 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 419 of them in general wards and 42 in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccination

Kenya has at August 2, 2021, administered 1,726,937 vaccines across the country.

Of these, the total first doses are 1,064,500 while the second doses are 662,437.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 204,789, others 193,107, Health Workers 115,647, Teachers 96,026 while Security Officers are at 52,868.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 62.2 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.4 per cent.
