Some 589 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Kenya in the last 24 hours.
Kenya has in the last 24 hours lost 19 people to Covid-19, pushing the cumulative fatalities to 3,345.
In a statement from the Health Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe, the positive cases were from a sample size of 4,995. The positivity rate is now 11.8 per cent.
Of the cases, 580 are Kenyans while nine are foreigners. Some 343 are men and 246 are women. The youngest is a five-month-old baby while the oldest is 101 years old.
The total confirmed positive cases are now 173,661 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 1,845,884.
In terms of county distribution; Kisumu continued to lead with 100 new cases, followed by Nairobi 91, Bungoma 60, Homa Bay 54, Siaya 49, Uasin Gishu 37, and Busia 32.
Others are Nandi 24, Mombasa 17, Nakuru 17, Kakamega 12, Nyeri 11, Migori 11 and Vihiga 9.
Hospitals and mortuaries in Nyanza region are strained as the number of Covid-19 cases rises.
Most hospitals lack ward space for admissions, forcing some patients to lie on the floor.
Some 312 patients have recovered from the disease, with 184 from the Home Based and Isolation Care programme while 128 are from various health facilities countrywide.
The total recoveries now stand at 118,933 of whom 86,338 are from Home Based Care and Isolation programme, while 32,595 are from various health facilities countrywide.
About 994 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 5,049 patients are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care programme.
Some 114 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 29 of whom are on ventilatory support and 65 on supplemental oxygen.
In an advisory, acting Director General of Health Patrick Amoth said coronavirus cases have been on the rise in Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Busia, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kericho and Bomet counties in the last three weeks.
Dr Amoth’s statement showed Kenya had reported over 172,491 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 3,287 since March last year.
