RwandAir suspends flights to India after confirmed coronavirus case

Health & Science

Rwanda and Namibia have confirmed their first coronavirus cases. In Rwanda, the case involved an Indian citizen said to have arrived in the country from Mumbai on March 8. The country's Health ministry on Saturday said the man had no symptoms when he arrived but went to the hospital on March 13 when he fell sick. Following the case, RwandAir suspended all flights to India until April 30. “He is currently under treatment in stable condition and in isolation,” the ministry said. Some of the African countries that have confirmed coronavirus include Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Senegal, Togo, Cameroon and Burkina Faso. On March 8, Uganda said it would require travellers from worst-hit countries to stay in quarantine for two weeks at their cost.   Health minister Jane Aceng said the order affects both foreigners and citizens.   The most affected countries are China, Spain, France, Italy, Iran, Germany and South Korea.   Uganda's order came in the wake of Saudi Arabia imposing a temporary lockdown on its eastern Qatif province, which had a population of more than 600,000, to prevent the spread of coronavirus.   At the same time, some 70 people were on Sunday trapped under a collapsed five-storey coronavirus quarantine facility in China, the State Media reported.   Four people died after the hotel collapsed in Quanzhou. By dawn on Sunday, 47 individuals had been rescued, according to state media outlet People's Daily. On March 6, the Kenyan Health ministry led by CS Mutahi Kagwe resorted to sending coronavirus information via SMS. The national government has banned all conferences of international nature with more than 15 people for 30 days as a precautionary measure against coronavirus. When the first case of the novel coronavirus broke out in late December, the immediate worry was the impact on the African continent due to its close links to China. None of the cases reported in Africa so far have come from China but from Europe, with the most recent cases being from the US and Japan.
