What is the state of your health?

Health & ScienceBy Correspondent | Tue,Jul 11 2017 16:01:04 UTC | 3 min read

We all want to age gracefully. In fact, we strive to look good, feel good and generally appeal to our peers, friends and loved ones. Most individuals will actually screech with their intestines at the thought that they appear to be older than their actual age. Aging is however inevitable, and there is no reason for it to be associated with pain, slowness or disability. What we do not realize is that aging gracefully is a state of mind, and a reflection of an individual’s state of wellbeing.  Our focus should therefore not be the calendar age which also happens to be the date in which we were all born. We should all focus on our state of wellbeing which is ideally determined by our medical age.

At AAR Insurance, we have introduced a tool that determines an individual’s state of wellbeing. The tool called the AAR Proactiv age calculator, the tool determines a person’s state of health by assessing certain lifestyle parameters that influence their medical age. Depending on lifestyle and behavior, an individual’s medical age can either tally; or calculate as either younger or older than their calendar age. For Instance a person with a calendar age of 50 may actually be as fit as a 30 year old and a person with a calendar age of 20 may be as old as someone who is 40 years old.

The recent rise of non –communicable diseases that  contribute to just about 27% of deaths suffered by Kenyans, equivalent to almost 100,000 people per year, which has  affected most of us in one way or the other. We continue to mourn the loss of our loved ones, both young and old due to diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Hypertension etc. Sadly the main risk factors for such statistics can mostly be attributed to our lifestyle patterns. Our sedentary lifestyle, poor nutritional habits, exposure to tobacco use, exposure to alcohol and stress have all been linked to these worrying trends.

At AAR Insurance, we appreciate that the time has come for individuals and the society at large to take responsibility of their wellbeing. With a clear mission of delivering value by empowering individuals to take control of the things that matter most to them, we are keen to avert some of these worrying trends.

Innovations such as the proactiv medical age tool are providing a platform for Individuals to assess how fit or unfit they are, as well as their true state of health.

Our crazy and ever busy lifestyle may not only be slowing our medical age but could also be eating us alive. With little time for exercise, eating right, and socializing, the busy lifestyle is often at odds with our aspirations to stay well through lifestyle.

At AAR Insurance, We describe wellness as an active process of becoming aware of and making choices towards a healthy and fulfilling life. The next time you enjoy that bite of nyama choma or diss the stairs for that lift, take a minute to reflect on the impact of these on your wellbeing. After all don’t we all want to age gracefully? The Ultimate is that we all want to look good, feel good and enjoy life while at it.
