A Kenyan doctor attached to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has been feted as World Youngest Scientist of the Year.
Dr Menach Pyeko Owen, 34, is an ENT Head and Neck Surgeon at KNH’s ENT Department.
He had presented part of a research he conducted at the Hospital in 2011 titled “Cigarette Smoking and alcohol ingestion as risk factors for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma at Kenyatta National Hospital on throat cancer” at a World Congress (International Federation of Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Societies- IFOS 2013) held in Seoul, South Korea in June 2013.
“This is quite a nice paper. It exposes the rising incidence of cancer of the larynx in the third world which parallels increased smoking and alcohol drinking habits. It is an eye opener and gives good ground for more research to be done and formation of cancer registries. These efforts will form basis for better policy formulation and reduction of head and neck cancer in general” Dr Menach says.
He has previously won several awards namely Best Student in the Temporal Bone Dissection Course and Winner of the First Chris Sepmeijer Award for the Best Temporal Bone Masterpiece both with the Operation Ear Drop in Holland.
In 2011, he was awarded the Overall Best Master of Medicine in ENT Head and Neck Surgery Thesis Presentation at the University of Nairobi.
Dr Menach possesses a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) and Master of Medicine (MMed) (ENT Head and Neck Surgery) both from the University of Nairobi.
