Covid-19: 31 die, 161 in ICU as 932 test positive in last 24 hours

Kenya on Friday recorded 932 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, from a sample of 9,424 raising the country's caseload to 233,801.

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new infections take the country’s positivity rate to 9.9 per cent and cumulated tests conducted so far to 2,352,240.

Out of the new patients, 473 are male, whereas 459 are female, with the youngest carrier being an 11-month-old baby, and the oldest aged 100.

Of the new cases, 23 are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans.

Distribution

In terms of counties distribution Nairobi leads with 282, Kiambu 91, Kitui 66, Nakuru 65, Kajiado 62, Muranga 46, Marsabit, 32, Machakos 29, Garissa 25, Nyandarua 21, Tharaka Nithi 20, Isiolo 17, Mandera 14, Turkana 13, Uasin Gishu, Mombasa, Laikipia 11 cases each, Meru and Busia 1o cases each, Kakamega and Kisii 9 cases each, Tana River and Lamu 8 cases each, Homa Bay and Kericho 6 cases each, Bungoma, Taita Taveta, Nyeri, Kilifi and Makueni 5 cases each, Migori and Wajir 4 cases each, Elgeyo Marakwet, Embu and Kisumu 3 cases each, Nandi and Narok 2 cases each

Siaya Trans Nzoia, West Pokot and Bomet one case each.

Kenya’s Covid-19 toll reached 4,666 after 31 patients succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours.

Total recoveries so far stand at 218,228 after 1,457 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours with 1,309 from the Home-Based and Isolation care programme while 148 are from various health facilities in the country.

Of the total recoveries, 176,349 are from the Home Based Isolation Care programme while 41,879 are from various hospitals countrywide.

A total of 1,953 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 8,022 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

One hundred and sixty-one (161) patients are in the ICU, 108 of whom are on ventilatory support and 49 on supplemental oxygen. Four patients are on observation.

Another 699 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 627 of them in general wards and 72 in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccination

Kenya has at August 27, 2021, administered 2,693,039 vaccines across the country.

Of these, the total first doses are 1,894,240 while the second doses are 798,799.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 238,595, others 238,422, Health Workers 133,423, Teachers 121,552 while Security Officers are at 66,807.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 42.2 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.93 per cent.
