The Government will recruit and train Kenya Police Reservists (KPR) in the county in a bid to tackle escalating terror related incidents, the county commissioner said yesterday.

Speaking at Garissa Primary School playground during this year's Madaraka Day celebrations, James Kianda said plans are underway to undertake the recruitment of the reservists in different sub-counties starting next week.

He said the recruits will be strictly evaluated to avoid incompetent and untrustworthy ones finding their way into the force adding that those hired will be given adequate training.

The county commissioner said the KPRs will work under OCPDs in the respective sub-counties, and he called on members of the public to provide information regarding the activities of any criminals bent on committing a felony.

Kianda warned police officers who were accused of harassing people whether they were suspects or not.

"We are engaging all political, religious, and women leaders so that we speak in one voice to fight against our common enemy. Police are here to serve you and not harass and intimidate the public, those involved in misconduct will be dealt with," he said.

The people of Garissa attended the celebrations despite recent incidents of insecurity in the county.

The function was also attended by Governor Nathif Jama, his deputy Abdullahi Hussein, and other county executives.
