But it's definitely better than not knowing - although, on most occasions, it's unlikely to be a surprise.
There are often signs - your partner is glued to their phone, working late or constantly seeing friends you've never even heard of.
One bloke was praised for raising the alarm, after discovering that the woman he had slept with already had a partner.
And in order to ensure the other man knew, he hid the note in a really clever place.
The other man stashed it underneath the toilet seat, where the woman was unlikely to notice and remove.
It said: "This chick just told me she has a boyfriend the morning after.
"Sorry to tell you like this, but I'd want to know if I was you. Sorry, bro."
The boyfriend shared it on Twitter with the caption: "My girl cheated on me while I was out of town and the guy left me this note under the toilet seat..."
It was then uploaded to TikTok, where it went viral, with many praising the unknown man for outing the girl and being clever enough to hide the note.
One wrote: "Under the toilet seat real smart."
Another joked, writing: "I'm going to do this at my mate’s house and watch the fireworks."
A third added: "He's a real one for telling him like that."
Meanwhile, one woman left horrified after discovering her partner had gone behind her back and installed a hidden camera in their home.
The camera, which she says was disguised to look like a smoke alarm, left the wife feeling "sickened" and grossed out and she's now unsure if she can forgive her husband for betraying her in this way.
