Pre-school learners will report back to school a month after their primary and secondary counterparts who are expected back in October.

All schools were closed in mid-March after the outbreak of Covid-19.

The Dr Sarah Ruto-led education committee has recommended resumption of learning after the country started witnessing a drop in infections.

Monitor infections

Governors, who held an extra-ordinary meeting yesterday, said all Early Childhood and Development Education (ECDE) centres shall re-open one month after the re-opening of the primary and secondary schools to allow for time to monitor the rate of infection and management of the pandemic at the county level.

The governors said they reached the conclusion after reviewing guidelines developed by the Ministry of Education on health and safety protocols on reopening of ECDEs and technical training centres.

ECDEs and vocational training centres are under the counties while primary, secondary and university education is under the national government.

“Counties shall undertake random testing of Covid-19 on ECDE children before re-opening. In this regard, we urge the Ministry of Health to support counties with testing kits,” said Council of Governors chairman Wycliffe Oparanya.

He said all vocational training centres will re-open at the same time as primary and secondary schools.

CJ’s advice

Oparanya also said the council is reviewing the advisory by Chief Justice David Maraga on the dissolution of Parliament for failure to enact legislation on the implementation of the two-thirds gender principle.

The council lauded the Senate for approving the third generation revenue sharing formula.
