A woman broke up with her boyfriend after she was left shocked by his 'sexist' attitude towards having children.

The pair had been together for almost a year and a half, and had spoken about getting married and having children when they had finished with university and had paid off their student loans.

Recently, they were watching a film together about a family with multiple children and the woman jokingly told her boyfriend that he would love their kids more than he loves her.

She said the comment was made in complete jest and she even thinks it's normal for parents to love their children more than their spouse sometimes.

Not expecting a response, she was taken aback when he spoke in a 'serious tone' and said: "If it's a boy I will, not if it's a girl."

She wrote: "I told him that if he has that deep rooted resentment towards women and is that sexist in a way, we shouldn't have kids as that’s not the proper mindset to have nor should gender decide how much you love them.

"He said it’s rude I’d tell him that I don’t want to have his kids now and that his mindset is normal and many men love their sons more than daughters.

"To me, his mindset/ability to only love a boy that much feels like he thinks the opposite sex (women) are lesser compared to men.

"I’m not easily offended, but this seems like if he had a son he’d raise him the same way, which is concerning."

The throwaway comment led to the woman telling her partner that she couldn't be in a relationship with someone she felt 'doesn't respect me simply because I have a vagina'.

He said she was 'overreacting' and that the mindset came from his own father, who told him women are inferior and having boys is 'ideal'.

Once he realised how serious she was being, he insisted he would change but it was too late.

"I educated him on why his viewpoint is sexist and hope he changes to be a better man for someone else," she added.

"I’m heartbroken and so sad as this is the person I’m in love with, HOWEVER, life will go on and I'm better off without someone that doesn’t see me (or our potential babies) as an equal because of my gender."

The conversation also shocked others on Reddit, with one writing: "I think the more concerning thing would be that if he had a daughter, he'd always treat her as if she wasn't good enough."

Another said: "I can understand wanting a boy more than a girl... but straight up loving one more than the other? Psychopathic."
