Mec Monday: Ladies, this is how you stay safe while driving at night

Living

Ladies, no need to fear when it comes to driving at night. Yes, the darkness might be daunting and a bit terrifying the first time you drive alone but there are a few tricks I have picked up on in my many years of driving that have helped me ensure my security:

1. Remove the bling

This goes without saying, jewellery even in the slightest makes you a target. The shiny earrings and bangles tend to shine even brighter at night. So before even getting out of the building and going to your car, remove all the jewellery on you. Place them in your handbag for safe-keeping

2. Don’t walk to the parking lot alone

It might not be obvious for many, but many crimes happen in the parking lot. The period between walking to and actually entering your car is what thieves take advantage of. Ask the guard or a fellow colleague to walk you to the car lot.

3. Put on a hat

This trick was given to me by my mother, by putting on a hat, you are able to masquerade your appearance. Ladies are usually the biggest targets because we are deemed as weak and an easy target but when an individual can’t properly identify your gender it can help you stay safe.

4. Don’t stop for anything

Once you’re on the road, do not stop for anything. Nothing at all! If you have a flat tyre, drive with it that way until you reach a safe destination. If you see random people flagging you down, just speed by. If you come across a police checkpoint look around first before stopping, look for the official police cars, the sirens and usually there’s a pickup and lots of activity happening.

Recently there have been cases of criminal throwing stones at windshields in an attempt to make you stop. Do not stop. Instead, speed up and leave that area. The damage shall be covered by your insurance.

5. Remain calm

Panicking will take away your focus, try your best to calm down. Drive at a good speed, 70km/h is a good range. Not too fast, not to slow. Keep your lights on and be very alert. Try humming your favourite song, I personally hum Beyoncé’s Don’t hurt yourself.

Driving at night, particularly for a first-timer, can really send to the depths of an anxiety attack but if you calm down and adopt some of my tricks it should be a better experience.
