Kawira Mwangaza's woes reignite power games between MCAs, governors

The impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has heralded the resurgence of tussles between governors and Members of the County Assemblies (MCAs) under the President William Ruto administration.

In the previous President Uhuru Kenyatta regime, ouster motions at the county assemblies became the norm rather than the exception with former county bosses Mike Sonko (Nairobi), Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu) and Mohamed Abdi (Wajir) getting the sack while others such as Charity Ngilu (Kitui), Granton Samboja (Taita Taveta) and Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) survived by a whisker.

And with the MCAs drawing first blood against the governors - just three months after they assumed office following the August 9 General election- their actions are telling of a turbulent and bleak future for the county bosses. At the centre of the revolting disputes between the county ward representatives and the governors have always been multi-billion county budgets, development projects and allegations of gross violation of the Constitution, misuse of public office and flouting tender and procurement laws.
