Mistakes new couples should watch out for

Relationships

Dating someone new can feel like a breath of fresh air. It’s exciting to have those cute experiences like the honeymoon phase and for most people, the plan is to build something that will last for a long time.

The main thing that we focus on at the beginning is the chemistry and the butterflies you get from being with your new bae. All that lovey-dovey talk can temporarily make you forget that there are other details you need to tackle.

If you’re in a new relationship, these are some of the mistakes you need to avoid:

Making your bae the center of your life

Dating your crush can feel like a dream come true. You will want to spend time with them whenever you can, you will be eager to text or call them all day and you might even be ready to sacrifice everything for the sake of your relationship.

It’s great that you want to give your all to your partner but if you’re not careful, you might go overboard to a point where you forget that you have your own life to live.

This can trigger an unhealthy kind of dependency which can ruin your relationship.

Avoiding uncomfortable conversations

At the beginning stages of dating, we naturally want to focus on the positive parts of our experience. Everything seems so perfect and the last thing you would want to do is ruin the fun by bring up hard conversations like taking HIV and STD tests.

These topics might be difficult but they are one hundred percent necessary.

Expecting perfection

Reality usually settles in once the fairytale phase is done. The more time you spend with each other, the more things you notice about each other, including the negative ones.

If you had expectations for your relationship that are too high to achieve, you’re stetting up your relationship for failure.

It means that insignificant things like leaving the toilet seat up might spiral into a bigger issue than it actually is. As you get into a relationship, you should come with an open mind and a realistic perspective.

Getting too comfortable

People tend to put in more effort before they start dating as compared to when they start dating. It could be that you were more consistent with checking up on each other or that you were keener on staying fit but then changed after a while.

Just because you’re officially together doesn’t mean that you should ignore the things that made you fall for each other.

Maintain the same energy and things you did before, during and after the relationship.

Involving too many people in your relationship

People around you need to know the kind of person you’re dating. They’re just trying to look out for you, which is important.

The problem comes in when you start to include everybody in your relationship. Too many voices can completely change how you look at your partner and also, you can’t be sure that everyone wants the best for you.

It’s okay to let people know who you’re with but don’t overshare the details.
