Excessively dry hands have become a common occurrence since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. We’ve all been washing our hands more frequently and sanitizing often in an effort to prevent infection by the Covid-19 virus. The result has been very dry, irritated hands.

While you might be tempted to stop washing or sanitizing your hands, you shouldn’t. There are different ways you can prevent overly dry hands while still doing your best to keep you and your loved ones safe.

1. Use a moisturizing soap and sanitizer

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that we use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol since this is the amount required to get rid of disease-causing germs. This alcohol, however, will cause your hands to dry out. Counter this by looking for sanitizer that contains a moisturizing ingredient such as aloe vera, hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E.

In the same vein, use a gentle soap instead of antibacterial soap and ensure that you wash them for at least 20 seconds. Soaps with moisturizing ingredients will also help prevent dryness.

2. Use a moisturizer

Just because you have to wash your hands frequently doesn’t mean that you should skimp on moisturizing them. Carry some hand cream in your handbag so that you remember to apply it any time you wash your hands or sanitize. For better results, apply the hand cream just before your hands dry so as to lock in the moisture.

If your hands are super dry or you work in a field that requires you to wash your hands more frequently, bring out the big guns by using a heavier moisturizer at night and wearing cotton gloves which will allow your hands to better absorb the moisture.

3. Avoid using hot water

Soap will strip your hands of moisture andnatural oils making your hands dry and irritated. Hot water makes the situation worse.

Opt for lukewarm water instead which will help get rid of germs and protect your hands from moisture loss.
