Fitness: Weight loss vs inch loss, which is better?

Fitness

Weighing yourself regularly is part of most people’s fitness journeys and can have an impact on your mood and your motivation.

Losing weight means you are losing a combination of muscle, fat and water. The weight on your scales can fluctuate not only from day to day but even within one day.

Causes of weight fluctuations

Readings can be affected by:

How much water you are retaining, which is why you tend to be lighter in the mornings. The time of the month; you tend to be heavier just before and during your period. Bathroom use; how often are you relieving yourself. How often you eat and drink; you will inevitably be heavier at the end than the beginning of the day because of your food intake.

So, while scales are commonly used, they are not necessarily an accurate measure of your health. This is because:

They don’t take into account your body composition, i.e. What is fat vs muscle vs bone They don’t reflect changes happening to your body e.g., gaining muscle. A bodybuilder for instance would fall into the obese range based on weight alone, despite the fact that they have very little fat on their bodies. They can act as a demotivator; if your weight-loss plateau goes up it can make you fall off the wagon.

Losing inches

In comparison to weight loss, inch loss means you are losing fat.

To measure your weight loss more accurately it is important to understand your body composition.

You can do this by measuring yourself regularly so you can monitor your inch loss, not just your weight loss.

You can go a step further and enter your measurements into an online body-fat calculator to learn your body-fat percentage.

How to burn fat vs muscle

Why do we care about muscle?

Muscle is what keeps you looking firm and toned You derive your strength from your muscles The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest Increasing your muscle mass reduces your body fat percentage.

Therefore, we want to mitigate muscle loss as much as possible and encourage your body to burn fat instead.
