How avocados can help you lose weight

Healthy Eating
Don’t let the word ‘fats’ scare you because avocados have the healthiest kind of fats (Image: Shutterstock)

The humble avocado is an all-time favourite single-seeded berry for many people around the world.  You rarely meet people who don’t like avocados, and when you do, they sound absolutely crazy. What’s not to love about its rich creamy flavour that goes with practically anything?

This unique and delicious fruit is rich in nutrients and healthy fats, which some people fear may cause them to put on weight.

Don’t let the word ‘fats’ scare you because avocados have monounsaturated fats, which are actually the healthiest kind of fats. Make sure you stock up on avocados next time you go grocery shopping!

Stay full for longer

Avocados are high in fat and fibre, meaning that they will leave you feeling full and satisfied for longer. How this works is that fat and fibre slow down the release of food from your stomach. As a result, you feel full after a meal for a longer period of time, helping you eat fewer calories overall.

Avocados are perfect for appetite regulation if a large appetite is a personal struggle for you. Eating as little as half an avocado for lunch should decrease your desire to eat for up to five hours afterwards.

Boost exercise endurance

Pre-workout supplements are increasingly becoming popular. These are multi-ingredient dietary formulas that help boost energy and athletic performance. Creatine, caffeine and nitric oxide are some ingredients found in pre-workout supplements which have been shown to support athletic performance.

Previous research says that avocadoes naturally provide the same energy boost as most pre-workout supplements. So, instead of going the manufactured route, increase your avocado intake for improved athletic performance. Simple breakfast ideas which include avocadoes are avocado toast, a fruit smoothie, or an avocado and egg sandwich.

Fights free radicals

Free radicals are unstable atoms that are linked to ageing and a number of diseases. They are destructive oxygen molecules that trigger a number of chain reactions in the body that destroy cells and DNA which then cause all kinds of health problems.

When your mitochondria aren't functioning properly, your metabolism runs less efficiently.  Research conducted in Mexico found that mono-unsaturated-rich oil pressed from avocadoes can help mitochondria survive an attack from free radicals. Make sure you incorporate avocadoes into your diet to win the attack from health-threatening free radicals.
