Confessions: Should I give online dating a chance?

My life is really busy, and if I am honest, I am also reluctant to go out and socialise. I would like to have someone in my life though, so I have been thinking about dating online. I have read that online dating works these days, but my workmates make disparaging comments about their experiences. Does it work?
Hi Online Dating!
Online dating works much better nowadays. Since everyone has become comfortable video chatting, it means you can get to know someone new before meeting in real life.
And there are some tricks that can improve your chances! Obviously, you will want to post an attractive photo of yourself.
Photos that show you amongst a group of friends seem to work best, perhaps even touching one of them modestly, such as on the arm.
People whose usernames start with letters in the first half of the alphabet tend to get more responses than those who come later, so choose a screen name like Annie, rather than Zoey.
No one really knows why, but similar effects are also seen elsewhere. During elections, people whose names are earlier on alphabetical ballot papers get more votes than they deserve.
Men tend to be most attracted to usernames that highlight a woman’s looks, while you will probably find yourself going for names that suggest that a man is intelligent. Try to choose an upbeat sounding name, it will get more responses.
People also tend to go for profiles that are brief and easy to understand. You will probably like profiles that suggest that a man is brave and willing to take risks.
Men on the other hand will be more attracted to your profile if it suggests that you are physically fit.
Humour is always a winner but is best shown through an amusing profile, rather than by just claiming to have a good sense of humour.
You will also stand a chance of clicking with someone who is right for you if about two-thirds of your profile is about yourself, and the rest is about what you are looking for in a partner.
Send a personal response to anyone you are interested in rather than the generic email. Respond quickly to any messages you receive, be honest and avoid trying to appear perfect.
Start video chatting long before you meet, and be sure to sit up straight, smile lots, and pay genuine compliments without seeming flattering.
