Two people have been confirmed dead after a six-storey building under construction collapsed at Joyland area in Ruaka, Kiambu County.
The Standard has learnt that the two, a husband and wife were in their home, adjacent to the building when they were trapped in the rubble.
Confirming the incident, County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha said the rescue operation has been called off.
Nkanatha said authorities are looking for the owner of the building, as investigations commence.
Thursday's incident comes a month after another residential building collapsed in Kirigiti, Kiambu county, killing three people.
The National Construction Authority (NCA) attributed over 80 per cent of all incidents of collapsed buildings in the country to poor workmanship.
The authority said most of the collapsed buildings were constructed with substandard materials.
"Professional misconduct, using unqualified labour, greed for wealth by developers, poor structural design, and weak foundations are also to blame," said NCA chairman David Gaitho.
