Learning to leave your comfort zone

Career Tips

There’s a reason most people prefer staying in their comfort zones. Change is unpredictable, it forces us to face our discomfort and most of all, it requires that we step away from what is familiar.

One of the questions I hear from women a lot is how to tackle being in an unfamiliar environment and making a success of it while at the same time creating an ecosystem of people who are as invested as you are in your success.

Persistence

Most of us are afraid of the word ‘no’. But the thing to remember is that while the worst thing that can happen is someone saying no to you, no means nothing. It could mean that the present is not a good time, or that the proposal you have doesn’t work for the person you’re speaking to.

But it doesn’t mean you cannot pursue other avenues.

People say no for different reasons, in a lot of cases because they are protecting their position within the organisation or they do not want an even bigger workload. To increase chances of getting a yes on your request, make it as easy as possible for the person to say yes.

Ensure you have put yourself in their shoes in terms of what they will need to say no to in order to accommodate your request. But at the end of the day, do not give up.

Embrace your fear

That you are apprehensive about an assignment or a meeting does not mean there’s anything wrong with you. If anything, it means what you are pursuing is worthwhile and being afraid is a natural part of the process. However, ensure this apprehension does not paralyse you or hold you back from actually taking action.

The answers

It is unlikely that you will know all the answers. There is a certain joy to faking it until you make it. If an assignment comes your way and you are unsure of how to proceed, all you need to do is a bit of research, it is likely that you will come across someone who has tackled it before and who will be of help.

Have the passion and commitment to pursue a project or course of action and marshal resources to give you additional insights.
