Four tips to help you eat delicious, healthy food on a tight budget

Adopting a healthy diet has always been the best formula for a long, happy life. It’s something that should be part of your everyday life rather than a short-term solution for the sake of your overall wellness.

But let’s not lie to ourselves, dieting can be very boring at times and no one wants to be miserable. Family dinners and buffets do not make it easy when every sweet, juicy and fatty food is on the offing.

Food is meant to be enjoyed and believe it or not, you can actually combine good food and healthy eating even when you’re on a budget.

With these tips, you’ll get to see how you can enjoy nutritious food without spending all your cash. Here is how:

  • Keep it simple

If you look all over social media, you will see that food is one of the main areas of interest. There is an unsaid competition on who has the best Insta-worthy pic of their meal including the dieting pages. This can be so discouraging especially when you want to learn how to eat healthy and can’t afford all those fancy ingredients.

To stay on track, you can let all that superficial pressure go and focus on your goals when it comes to living healthy.

Enjoy simple meals like ugali and traditional, vitamin packed veggies, delicious vegetable stews with matoke and other creative meal combos that will keep you energized and healthy.

  • Buy discounted items

Many of us are guilty of snubbing discounted items because we automatically think they’re not fit for consumption. We assume they’re expired and we basically ignore them because they might not look as good as the items that aren’t on sale.

If this is you, you are missing out on some of the best deals by walking past these items.

Yes, some of them don’t look as pretty but that doesn’t mean that they still don’t have their nutritional value. You might even be able to buy some of those fancy ingredients you wanted now that they’re on sale.

  • Get creative with your snacks

One major challenge when you’re on a diet is having a variety of snacks to choose from. I know it’s tempting to binge on a huge slice of cake or a whole bar of chocolate when you’re looking for something sweet for dessert.

But, the good thing about being on a ‘budget diet’ is you start getting some creative ideas like learning how to make healthy homemade ice cream along with other low sugar and low calories treats that you love.

Take time to research on the thousands of recipes you can experiment with and choose those that work best for you and meet your dietary needs.

  • Make the most out of leftovers

Start thinking of new ways you can use your leftovers. This gives you more ingredients to work with when preparing future meals, prevents wastage and allows you to save a lot of money since the temptation to order some comfort food is reduced when you already have something to eat at home.

The first thing however is to always ensure you’re storing your leftovers properly to maintain the freshness.

If it’s something that should be refrigerated or frozen, make sure that you store them well and on time so they don’t go bad and possibly cause a stomachache ache. You should also avoid eating leftovers that have been stored for way too long.
