The recent coronavirus pandemic that is ravaging the world has put life on a standstill. Schools are shut, we’ve been asked to stay at home as much as possible and follow strict hygiene practices. With all these changes, as parents, it is our duty to explain this new way of life to our kids to alleviate fears and ensure that they have all the right information from trusted sources, us.

Just as we talked about how to talk to your kids about COVID-19, it’s important to know what to tell them. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gave a guideline on what parents can tell their children about coronavirus.

About the virus

Coronavirus is a new virus that is making many people around the world sick. Because it has not affected people before, scientists and doctors are still learning about it i.e. where it came from and how to treat it.

In the meantime, they are doing everything they can to care for those who are sick and to prevent any more from getting sick.

Symptoms

Those who have been infected by the virus have shown different symptoms. However, many have a high temperature, persistent cough and have a hard time breathing and talking. Among those who have gotten sick, most of their symptoms are mild. Very few get very sick.

Prevention

Health officials have given a number of guidelines, which if we follow, can help us slow the spread of coronavirus.

Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water especially when you come from outside. To ensure that you have washed your hands well, sing the Happy Birthday song twice. Wet your hands, lather them up with soap and rub your hands together. Rinse and dry.

If you don’t have access to soap and water, use a hand sanitizer.

Avoid touching your face particularly your nose, eyes and mouth. This is how you can transfer the germs to yourself.

Cough or sneeze into your elbow or into a tissue and dispose of it into a closed dustbin.

Keep your surroundings clean. Clean frequently touched items like the TV remote, door handles and light switches.

If you feel sick, let your parent know

Keep in mind that your child might still have questions about the pandemic. Encourage them to ask as many questions as they have. This is their way of alleviating their fears and understanding why life is different now.

What ‘old person’ things do you do?
