July is the new August: the month of death

Living

Some elders have passed away in such rapid succession recently – GG Kariuki, NkaiSirry, Biwott n Kiplagat – ye just gat ta ask yourself if July has become the new August (which is the designated month for prominent political persons to die, n bad national events to happen). Anyway, without more ado, here are the six songs you're likely to find as the soundtrack on de odder side.

Black Hole Sun – Sound Garden Tis telling that a coupla months ago, the lead singer of this rock band committed soocide by hanging. In disguises no one knows, hides the face, lies the snake, the sun in my disgrace. Call my name, thru yur dream, and you will hear me scream again ...’

This is for someone who was secretive in real life.

Streets of Philadelphia – Bruce Springsteen My clothes don’t fit me no more, walked 1000 miles, just to slip this skin ... Ain’t no angel gonna greet me, it’s just you and I, my friend. Perfect wimbo for someone passing away N they are taking long strolls, their despair is hanging even in the air. And ain’t no point tellin’ em about heaven, my fren’, coz they already know ain’t no-one waiting to receive ‘em there.

Welcome to the Black Parade – by My Chemical Romance (MCR) Will you, defeat them, your demons, and all the Believers, and the lies that they have made? Because one day, I’ll leave you, a phantom in the summer – and join the Black Parade ...

This is from a father to the son, telling his boy to conquer his inner imps (drugs, drink, etc) because the day is coming when Dad will be a ghost, that is, forever lost to Eternity! N you need to ‘YouTube’ the video to just watch ‘Black Parade’ live – from the feller dying in hospital (from thrombosis?) to the dramatic drumbeats as he proudly ‘marches’ in the Parade of the Dead.

One Headlight – Jacob Dylan & the Wallflowers I seen the sun comin’ up at the funeral at dawn/ the long broken arm of human law But she ran until she outta breath, she ran until there’s nothing left/ she hit the end, it’s just her window ledge ... A profound song, esp for a friend who has committed soocide by jumpin’ 4rm a buildin’(ledge). Beautiful imagery there by the younger Dylan too! Can you see that dawn funeral? The tombstones at the cemetery like ‘long broken human arms’?

Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen It has long been declared the greatest rock song of the twentieth century (1954 – 1999 in rock years). But did you know, like the Lunje ‘eeeeee eeee eee ee’ song, it is actually a deadly dirge? Check this out. I don’t wanna die, if I’m not back again this time tomorrow, carry on, carryyy ooon, As if nothing really matters ... (pam pam pam pam) I see a little silhouette-o of a man, Thunderbolts & lightning, are very very frightening me ...

Follow You Into The Dark – by ‘Death Cab for Cutie’ N this is my all-time favourite for the song most likely to welcome ye to the Other Side of afterlife. If Heaven n Hell decide that they both are satisfied/ Illuminate the ‘NO’s on their vacancy signs ... If there’s no one beside you, when your soul (dis)embarks; then I’ll follow you into the dark.

Howze that for death pact?
