It’s that time again when everybody reflects on the past year and starts to think about all the changes they want to make in their lives in 2017. People are resolving to lose weight, travel, change careers, start saving money and so on.
There are a lot of facets in life that people make resolutions for and I have noticed that people neglect to make resolutions for one very important aspect of their lives - their love lives. It is important to incorporate a few New Year’s resolutions to kick-start your love life in the New Year.
This time, as you are thinking about the changes you need to make to ensure your 2017 will be a great year financially and health-wise, think of how you can make it a great year relationship-wise as well. I have compiled a few dating resolutions to help you get started.
Stop comparing your love life to someone else’s
Resolve to stop comparing your love life to everyone else’s. So what if you are the only one in your group of friends who isn’t married or in a stable relationship, or the only one who doesn’t have kids? Or maybe you are jealous of your friend who gets gifts and fancy dates from her boyfriend all the time.
If you are in the habit of using another relationship as the measuring stick for your own, resolve to break that bad habit. You could be working yourself up for nothing. Appearances can be deceiving. The only relationship that you have all the details on is your own and the timeline of your love life will always be the right timeline for you.
Stop wasting your time and feelings on people that don’t deserve you
In 2017, you need to only date people who appreciate you and value your time. Go out with people who don’t take you for granted, people who make you feel special and treat you as a priority. When you start feeling like you are not being treated the way you deserve, walk away.
Stop wasting your time with people who make you feel unappreciated, or not good enough, or like you need to beg for their attention. If that person you’re seeing can’t make up his mind whether he wants to commit or not, make an authoritative decision for yourself, and stick to it. Never allow someone to be your priority while allowing yourself to be their option.
Don’t apologize for having high standards
Don’t be afraid to be labelled “a diva” or “high maintenance”. This new year, you have to stand up and own your right to have standards for your life and the people you welcome into it. High standards signify a woman who knows her worth. Don’t compromise your standards just so you can have someone.
Stop explaining and rationalizing your love life to anyone
You don’t owe anyone an explanation about why you are single at 30 or why you don’t have kids or anything pertaining to your love life for that matter. Not to your family, or your friends. It is frankly none of their business and you should not allow them to meddle in your life.
You are under no obligation to rationalize any part of your love life to anyone, unless you want to. You don’t owe anyone an explanation for where, when and how you conduct your sex life either.
