Why men from rich families make good boyfriends but ...

Relationships

It is unfortunate that the dating pool has increasingly become shallow, with a sea of frogs for every prince. Older and experienced women can bear me witness for most have seen it all, and have perhaps partaken in a slew of dating misadventures.

At one point in my life, I remember naïvely telling myself: “I’m going to marry for love not for money.” I got a couple of guys who had great potential but unfortunately, were ever broke. So I ended up paying for dates, buying them airtime and lending out money that was never returned. When I found myself buying my own chocolate bars and roses one Valentine’s Day, yet I had a boyfriend is when I gave up on broke men; especially those who like being kept by women.

Dating a broke man is one of the biggest challenges a woman can experience in life. I mean, while love is all fine and dandy, it cannot buy the kind of lifestyle many women envision for themselves and future family. So just like most men hunt for beautiful women or those with curvy bodies and perfect hour glass figures, women hunt for men with financial muscle. Guys, there is nothing personal, that’s just the way it its.

Men should not take this personally, because money is a very important factor that women consider when choosing long-term partners. Thank God most Kenyans have come to appreciate this reality. Look, you can’t eat love, neither can it pay bills.

Although a man’s financial ability is key today in matters relationships and marriage, let me confess another sad reality.

Dating adventures

Most rich men make terrible husbands. In fact, in my dating adventures I have come to learn that there are types of rich men that must be avoided at all cost. Firstly, the sons of aristocrats.

Yes, they make the best boyfriends because of the exposure and access they can provide, but are the worst husbands. By aristocrats I mean men from monied families. They have gone to the most expensive schools and attended Ivy League Universities and colleges abroad.

Men who had their first German car before they turned 16. They have never done an honest day’s job in their lives. Basically, they have no clue about the real value of a shilling! I once dated a man who at age 33 lived in a penthouse apartment in Nairobi’s Lavington suburb. I later came to find out that his father not only paid his rent, but also gave him a monthly allowance to indulge his expensive impulses.

Wasteful, lacks discipline

A man who despite working for his mother’s company where his only job was to make an appearance, got the title of manager. He lacked discipline, was pompous with grandiose self-given titles and carried an air of upper class indolence that was thoroughly distasteful.

He is to date the laziest and the most directionless man I have ever dated in my entire life. Another type of rich man ladies must be warned about is the young ‘tenderpreneurs’. These guys come as young as 30. They got a tender one day and bought a Prado the next day. Plus they quickly moved residence to Kileleshwa almost immediately.

You will see them round and about town buying drinks for everyone. They are social climbers, very cliché and pretentious in their attempt to join the class of Kenyan aristocrats.

Such types are unfortunately often wasteful, lacks discipline and probably will be broke by the next election if not sooner. When fishing in the deep dating seas, ladies you are better off with a man who has actually put in some work to be rich.
