BRIDE: Quinter Atieno Akumu

GROOM: Eric Lewa Katana

DATE: December 5, 2015

GUESTS: 450

VENUE: A.C.K Emmanuel Kengeleni, Mombasa

BUDGET: Sh1,000,000

FIRST DATE

ERIC: Two years ago, I knew Atieno to be an avid reader because whenever we bumped at the university, she was either reading or collecting past exam papers. This really attracted me to her because just like her, I love reading. This was in 2012 and although I lacked the courage to tell her how I felt then, I knew she was meant for me.

The following year, I was surprised to meet her in my neighbourhood, we talked about a lot of general issues and I discovered she was very mature. This time I was not going to let her go without letting her know my intentions so I gave her my card and waited for her to call but she did not.

Later when we met along the same road, she told me she had discarded my card since she did not understand what to do with it and so I took her number and that night wished her goodnight, in the morning I wished her the best and that's how the relationship began.

I still remember that evening after picking her from work, we went for dinner at Bahari Gates Restaurant in Mtwapa. We shared a meal and shared a lot about our families, work, friends, likes and dislikes. She also made it clear that marriage was a sacred institution and if she were to be married, it must be through a church ceremony.

Although I was nervous, I made my intentions clear to her and she said she would go pray for it.

PROPOSAL

ERIC: I proposed officially in August 2014. I had however, told her severally that I wanted to make her my wife but on this day I had bought an engagement ring and was very serious about proposing to her.

It was on a Sunday evening and when she passed by my place from work, I told her to go freshen up and change because I needed to have a serious talk with her somewhere. She came back and we went to the Moorings Floating Restaurant in Mtwapa. I had planned with the staff there that after dinner, they would arrange a boat ride with some drinks.

I wanted to engage her inside a boat but when she became adamant, I complied. The whole idea of proposing at the floating boat was because of the scenery it offers and I wanted it to be memorable.

THE DRAMA

QUINTER: On the wedding day, some of the groomsmen and flower girls could not fit into their clothes and also one of the service providers failed to meet our expectations despite charging an arm and a leg.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

QUINTER: When the pastor told us to kiss at the altar!

ERIC: I will also remember with fond memories my groomsmen for the morale and psyche they had on the wedding day as it helped me stand strong and keep my shyness at bay. Seeing the bride walk to the altar accompanied by her mum almost left me in tears, this was the time I had been waiting for, she looked so fragile yet so beautiful in her snow white mermaid gown.

WITH HINDSIGHT

QUINTER: Seek God's approval for the whole wedding process. Work within your budget and don't rely too much on wedding committees because they can disappoint you big time.

ERIC: Don't put a lot of trust on service providers because they can fail you at the eleventh hour. If we were to do it all over again, we would change some of the service providers.
