I am done with these young, clueless doctors!

Parenting

If you have two or more children, when one is sick, especially the older one, chances are high, the bug will spread to the baby.

So this past week, my Tasha came down with a very bad cough. The moment the symptoms started manifesting, I knew that Troy, who is almost three months, would catch the virus.

As the health-conscious mother, instead of opting to get her cough syrups and antibiotics (they rarely treat the problem, they just complicate it), I opted to give her the recommended honey concoction. Within three days of drinking the concoction, Tasha was on her way to recovery.

Now the problem is, Troy had already caught the virus by then. It started with a distant cough, but on day two, the flu took a toll on her.

And when he caught it, it hit the poor baby so hard, the honey concoction was not an option. He was coughing, had a fever, his feeding took a dive and he was in a nasty mood. I hate hospitals, but I had to take him. I know the usual drill and it's sickening.

Well, I took him to a nearby private hospital and the experience was nothing but impressive. The queues notwithstanding, we started with the triage and up to the doctor's office. Now guess who we found chatting discreetly on Facebook? The young, trendy and aloof Dr Angela.

I don't mean to maliciously discredit her credentials, but Dr Angela looks like those students who acquired her medical degree, not because of her sheer brilliance and passion in Medicine, but because she is from a well-off family and her wheeler-dealer father sponsored her to go pass time at Med school, killing Angie's dreams of being a DJ.

So the moment I spotted that she was the one going to attend to my precious baby, my mind just switched off.

Our conversation told it all.

"So mama what is wrong with the baby?" she asked absent-mindedly.

"She has a cough and a fever for two days," I answered and pre-empting her second question I added, "We have not travelled in the past one month and 'no' she has not vomiting and no diarrhea."

I summarized it that bluntly so that she does not send me to the lab for a series of irrelevant tests.

After consulting, Dr Google and reading that small doctor's book, they love referring to, she retorted: “Okay mum, I will write for you some antibiotics, cough syrup and Paracetamol."

And why does she have to prescribe the most expensive antibiotic. And by the way, antibiotics do not even treat viral infections. I took the prescriptions tore it and left.

"Who knows a good, experienced and elderly pediatrician," that's what I posted on a popular women's Facebook forum and that's how I ended up at Prof Macharia's clinic. Long story short, baby is now well thanks to God and Prof Macharia's wise counsel.
