Guide for expecting mums

Living

When a woman gets pregnant, a million and one ideas run through her mind. Unfortunately, hair is rarely part of it. Some women will completely ignore their hair care routine at the expense of the hair’s wellbeing.

During pregnancy, a lot of hormonal changes take place in a woman’s system and hair too, is affected.  Some effects are positive, while others are negative.

When I was expecting my first child, my hair got a boost; it grew tremendously. Other women have a different story to tell. We look at some pregnancy hair issues that women face.

Hormonal changes: As your baby grows inside your womb, its effects can be seen through your hair and scalp. Some women will experience dry scalp, while others will have their hair becoming too oily.

The hormonal changes are responsible for all these. To fix this problem, start using a shampoo and conditioner that is suitable for your type of hair during this period. Your hair stylist is best suited to guide you on the best product to use.

Makeover: Yes pregnancy is the period when a woman’s life is controlled by her moods and many major changes happen in our life. This is the time a woman will not be keen on retouching or even colouring their hair, given that some believe the chemicals could harm the unborn baby. The best they are comfortable doing is cutting it or permanently staying in braids. Before you make any of these changes, be sure you will be comfortable in your new look. Seeking voice of reason? Speak to your hairdresser.

Colour or none: Researchers are yet to conclusively tell us whether chemicals in the hair can harm the foetus. Some say that the chemicals get into our bloodstream while others disagree. For safety reasons, wait until your second trimester if you must colour your hair (just to be on the safe side).

After baby

1. Once the baby is born, new hair problems arise. Some women will experience hair loss usually above the temple and the front hairline. Others will just lose plenty of hair on the entire head. For those who lose hair on the hairline, this is the best time to try a fringe look.

2. Most women will experience dry hair right after the delivery, and it can last about the first two months. This is the best time to go for shampoos and conditioners that will nurture your hair. Again, your hairstylist is best suited to guide you on this.

3. Your hair may also experience some texture changes. You will hear women lamenting about how their hair felt better before the baby’s arrival – the hair may become courser and the change may be permanent. The best thing to do is to embrace the change. Try out new products and new hairstyles for a peace of mind.
